The city and its development are the motto of the URBAN Community Initiative of the European Union. Besides Leipzig, eleven other German cities are participating in the program during 2001-2006. Leipzig will receive about 20 Mill. EUR during the time until 2006 from the European Fund for Regional Development. The main focus of the city renewal program is on the Western and Eastern part of Leipzig and parts of "Grünau". A fertile ground for the development of commerce and attractive residential areas will be established by active city rebuilding.Besides several financial aids, e.g. urban construction aids and aids from the Federal Institute of Labour, the URBAN-Project in Leipzig will receive further aids to strengthen small and medium-size businesses, and to improvement of the social and recreation infra-structure. It is the common task to establish new chances for the western part of Leipzig in connection of the single steps and resources. However, the measures will only be successful, if they are accomplished by the city and the residents together. Therefore, the activities need to be connected.
